the Silent Star

The idea

A place to
sit in silence.

I wanted to build something challenging and beautiful, and give people a place to pause at Burning Man.

The Sanctuary was a wooden lotus, approximately 17 feet tall. An enclosed inner space sat within three layers of petals. The work was built at the Loom in Oakland, assembled in Black Rock City, and burned at the end of its time on the playa.

I was the lead artist. A team of artists, architects, engineers, builders, and volunteers helped make it possible.
